Volunteer

Volunteer cutting fabric for boomerang bags

Everything we have accomplished since our founding in 2016 can be directly attributed to the efforts of volunteers like you. Even as we grow to tackle some of the biggest goals in the Crested Butte Climate Action Plan, there will always be a need for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, check out some of the options below and then sign up at our volunteer sign-up page by clicking the button below.

Social Media Maestro

This volunteer position might be right for you if:

  • You are always posting gorgeous photos on your Instagram account.
  • You love talking to people about how they can make more sustainable choices.
  • You have the flexibility to post at different times of day and to engage with our followers.
  • You don’t get flustered by negative comments on posts.
  • You have done our 7-Day Sustainability Challenge and have already implemented a lot of the changes in your own life.

In 2021, volunteers on our social media team will be responsible for helping build our following on both Facebook and Instagram, sharing information about sustainable lifestyle changes, promoting Waste-Free Events, and introducing people to the content on our updated website through regular posting.

If this sounds like you, reach out to sustainablecb@gmail.com. We’d love to have you join the team!

Webmaster

This volunteer position might be right for you if:

  • You are familiar with making edits on WordPress Sites.
  • You are a strong writer and editor.
  • You are an independent worker.

In 2021, our volunteer webmaster will be responsible for making minor and occasional edits to our website. We just re-did the majority of the content and the site architecture. As we update programs, minor updates will be needed from time to time. This person will also need to coordinate with our social media volunteers about sharing content from the website regularly.

If this sounds like you, reach out to sustainablecb@gmail.com. We’d love to have you join the team!

Waste-Free Events Logistician/Consultant

Our Waste-Free Events program takes a lot of volunteer hours, but it’s also one of our most impactful programs. In the first four years of the program, our event partners diverted over 70,000 single-use waste items from the local landfill by using our materials. This is our largest volunteer team.

This volunteer position might be right for you if:

  • You have a brain for logistics.
  • You love your calendar and never miss a meeting or important deadline.
  • You want to become an expert on hosting zero-waste events.

Our Waste-Free Events volunteers start off by helping with drop-off/pick-up and washing of our materials. Over time, they have the option to learn about the ins and outs of Waste-Free Events and become a Waste-Free Events consultant. Consultants volunteer their time to help event organizers plan the details of Waste-Free Events from start to finish. This unique service is critical to helping us meet the goals in the Crested Butte Climate Action Plan.

Eco-Tips Writer

The Crested Butte News has generously given us space in the Newspaper to share eco-tips on a regular basis with the community. All of our Eco-Tips are written by volunteers.

This position might be right for you if:

  • You’re constantly emailing or texting your family members or friends to share the new idea you just came upon that is helping you lead a more sustainable life.
  • You are a strong writer and editor.
  • You stay up-to-date on the latest innovations in sustainable living.
  • You never miss a deadline.

Eco-tips writers are assigned different weeks to write eco-tips. They coordinate together on topics and then are responsible for writing brief articles for the Crested Butte News about sustainable changes that everyone can make in their lives. They then submit them to publication in the CB News by the weekly print deadline.

Advocacy Researcher

Although we got our start lobbying the Town of Crested Butte for a plastic bag ban, we took a break from advocacy to focus on programming for a little while. We’re ready to dive back into advocacy now and are looking to build up that program.

This position might be right for you if:

  • You pay close attention to newly proposed environmental policies.
  • You always know the latest change.org petitions related to the environment and sustainability.
  • You regularly engage with our representatives and political system and are comfortable with helping others do the same.

As we rebuild this part of our organization, this is going to be a very important and active volunteer role. We envision this person keeping our team abreast of what is happening locally and nationally with regards to environmental policy and helping us keep track of the most important issues with which we or our followers can engage. This person may help the Webmaster with creating website content, they may help an Eco-tip writer with drafting a policy-related Eco-tip, and they will definitely help our Social Media Maestros with getting regular information out to our followers about how they can engage politically.

Interns

We look forward to continuing a partnership with the Crested Butte Community School in 2021 to offer an internship program for student volunteers. Interns spend about 5-8 hours per week working in a pair to spearhead a project. They will meet regularly with board members and learn about nonprofit governance, sustainability, and project management. In 2021, we expect our interns will be deployed helping with our flagship Waste-Free Events program.

“Sustainable Crested Butte allows the community an avenue to pursue sustainable lives and encourage others to do the same. As an intern in the summer of 2020 I was taught all about nonprofits, the initiatives, grant writing, and how to begin my own projects, and I have taken all those skills with me to continue being an environmental activist. I love the way SCB involves the community through events, internships, and resources for those seeking environmental justice, and I love the way SCB gives the Earth a voice in our town. SCB encouraged me to take action on my passion for keeping our Earth green, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.”

-Sophie Truex, Summer 2020 Intern, CB Community School Student

To apply, students will contact our Crested Butte Community School Facilitator (to be announced) at the end of the school year. All candidates will interview with the Sustainable CB board and two candidates will be selected.

In the future, we hope to expand our internship program to a year-round program.
